And the Florida jokes just keep coming.
The writers of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” must enjoy following South Florida headlines because they poked fun of President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, Palm Beach County’s overheated vote-counting machines and Wilton Manors’ newly elected commission this weekend.
Guest host Steve Carell donned a bald wig to portray Amazon chief executive officer Jeff Bezos in a skit called “A Message from Jeff Bezos” in which he explained why Arlington, Virginia and New York’s Queens were chosen as the sites for Amazon’s second headquarters. Carell’s Bezos made fun of how he was trying to “overshadow” and mock the President by picking cities closely associated with him. (Trump grew up in Queens and lives in Washington D.C.)
But Bezos also went on to include another Amazon location across the street from the President’s Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach.
“We need access to a young, educated workforce,” Carell’s Bezos said. “We set up a satellite office in Palm Beach, Florida, across the street from Mar-a-Lago.” Then a map of Florida highlighted the fictional Amazon office in Palm Beach near the president’s resort.
But that wasn’t the only Florida mention on the show. The Sunshine state (or what the show called the Live Fun Die State in the previous episode) came up again during the “Weekend Update” segment with Colin Jost and Michael Che.
First up was the overheated vote-counting machines.
“Election officials in Florida said the ballot machines overheated causing mismatched results in the recount,” Che said. “Word, they overheated in 2018 with all this technology? I have a watch that can count every step I take and let me watch porno on the treadmill, for motivation. But your voting machines can’t even handle a little recount? How come the IRS never had these problems?”
Continuing on the Florida theme, Jost then introduced a news story on how a county (actually the city of Wilton Manors in Broward) became the first local government in Florida history to elect an all LGBTQ government.
“For more on this, bring it up to your grandpa on Thanksgiving,” Jost joked.
