Aug. 31–The Pew Research Center released a study in March that found only 24 percent of American adults use Twitter.
That means only 24 percent of the voting public is exposed to all of President Donald Trump’s tweets, though the percentage is undoubtedly lower as not everyone on Twitter pays attention to politics.
That’s not a good situation. Trump on Twitter is the president at his most unfiltered. One can breeze through the day’s political headlines and get whiffs of what’s going right or wrong, but Twitter is a mirror held up to the president’s true paranoid, dishonest and generally addled nature.
You should know what your president is thinking and doing. You should know how much time he devotes each day to rage-tweeting and spouting conspiracy theories. Even if you support him — in fact, especially if you support him — you should pay attention.
With controversies and legal problems swirling in every direction, Trump is tweeting more and more like the walls are closing in on him.
The tweet storms start at the crack of dawn, brimming with defensiveness and baseless accusations, making each morning feel like a manic, bathrobe-clad version of Nixon’s “I am not a crook!” exclamation crossed with the ever-repeating movie “Groundhog Day.”
What follows are our president’s tweets from just Thursday morning, along with the time each was posted in the Eastern time zone. It’s important that you read them:
5:50 a.m.: “The hatred and extreme bias of me by @CNN has clouded their thinking and made them unable to function. But actually, as I have always said, this has been going on for a long time. Little Jeff Z has done a terrible job, his ratings suck, & AT&T should fire him to save credibility!”
6:02 a.m.: “What’s going on at @CNN is happening, to different degrees, at other networks — with @NBCNews being the worst. The good news is that Andy Lack(y) is about to be fired(?) for incompetence, and much worse. When Lester Holt got caught fudging my tape on Russia, they were hurt badly!”
6:11 a.m.: “I just cannot state strongly enough how totally dishonest much of the Media is. Truth doesn’t matter to them, they only have their hatred & agenda. This includes fake books, which come out about me all the time, always anonymous sources, and are pure fiction. Enemy of the People!”
6:20 a.m.: “The news from the Financial Markets is even better than anticipated. For all of you that have made a fortune in the markets, or seen your 401k’s rise beyond your wildest expectations, more good news is coming!”
6:44 a.m.: “Ivanka Trump & Jared Kushner had NOTHING to do with the so called “pushing out” of Don McGahn. The Fake News Media has it, purposely,so wrong! They love to portray chaos in the White House when they know that chaos doesn’t exist-just a “smooth running machine” with changing parts!”
6:56 a.m.: “The only thing James Comey ever got right was when he said that President Trump was not under investigation!”
7:54 a.m.: “Wow, Nellie Ohr, Bruce Ohr’s wife, is a Russia expert who is fluent in Russian. She worked for Fusion GPS where she was paid a lot. Collusion! Bruce was a boss at the Department of Justice and is, unbelievably, still there!”
8:17 a.m.: “The Rigged Russia Witch Hunt did not come into play, even a little bit, with respect to my decision on Don McGahn!”
8:39 a.m.: “I am very excited about the person who will be taking the place of Don McGahn as White House Counsel! I liked Don, but he was NOT responsible for me not firing Bob Mueller or Jeff Sessions. So much Fake Reporting and Fake News!”
8:49 a.m.: “Will be going to Evansville, Indiana, tonight for a big crowd rally with Mike Braun, a very successful businessman who is campaigning to be Indiana’s next U.S. Senator. He is strong on Crime & Borders, the 2nd Amendment, and loves our Military & Vets. Will be a big night!”
11:54 a.m.: “CNN is working frantically to find their ‘source.’ Look hard because it doesn’t exist. Whatever was left of CNN’s credibility is now gone!”
If you or I spent every morning writing like that, we’d be rightfully fired and escorted off to the Illinois Home for the Tragically Unhinged.
Forget the poor punctuation and random capitalizations. Forget the dangerous and un-American attacks on the media, which came the same day a man in California was arrested by the FBI for threatening to shoot journalists at the Boston Globe, referring to them using Trump’s words: “Enemy of the people.”
Don’t even worry about the parade of people he’s condemning in those tweets.
Just ask yourself if you think this is normal presidential behavior. If you had a friend or relative who, by noon, posted 11 rambling, paranoid blurbs on Facebook, would you be concerned about that person’s mental health?
More than three-quarters of American adults are missing the full daily onslaught of Trump’s tweets, which the Justice Department said in federal court last year are considered “official statements of the president of the United States.”
If you saw tweets like that from a friend or co-worker, you’d be worried. If you saw tweets like that from a stranger, you’d eye the nearest door and start slowly walking away.
If you see tweets like that coming from the president, you should be asking yourself: What the heck is going on?
