The US equities markets were sharply lower today on high volume due to fears over trade and overall business relationships between China and the United States. The current dispute was escalated as the Trump administration decided to block Chinese firms from investing into US technology companies, with the intention of impeding the transfer of technology developed in the United States to then be used by Chinese companies. Concerns over Chinese trade practices requiring the transfer of technology by foreign firms doing business with China has been around for decades. However, the White House took a much more aggressive stance on this issue than previous administrations, and this catalyzed the markets to sell-off as uncertainty rises.
